Psalm 8:3-4 When I consider Your heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and stars you have ordained, What is man that thou art mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him?
Voyager2 In 1991 when the Neptune stopped and started to leave the solar system, he turned to take the last shot of the earth, then we could see the distant image of our planet Earth at 6,000 million km . The most distant point of land seen by men and may have no particular interest, but for me it is different. Consider again the point.
That point in the universe is our home, that we, in him that we all love, all we know, all of whom 've heard and all human beings who were, and have lived their lives.
All of our joys and sufferings, thousands of confident religions, ideologies and economic doctrines, every hunter and every forager, every hero and every coward, every creator and destroyer of every civilization, every king and commoner, every young couple in love, each mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every moral builder, every corrupt politician, every superstar, every supreme leader, every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there, a speck of dust suspended in a beam.
The earth is but a tiny grain that is part of a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by hundreds of generals and emperors to get the glory and become the momentary masters of a fraction of this place called earth. Think about the cruel visits the inhabitants of one corner of this land made against the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, with its frequent misunderstandings, his eagerness to kill each other, with their fervent hatred.
Our position, our assumption imagined, the illusion that we have a special place in the universe are challenged by this point of pale light that is our planet, which is a solid speck in the vast cosmic darkness. Throughout this extensive
dark, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. Land is the only world known so far capable of harboring life, no other place, at least in the near future to which our species could migrate, visit or settle. Not yet, we like it or not, for the moment, the earth is where we are.
It has been said that astronomy is an experienced builder of character and humility and perhaps there is no better demonstration of the folly of human presumption that this image of the earth so far.
underlines the responsibility for me to share more kindly with one another to preserve and care for white and blue that point, the only home we have known. Carl Sagan (1934-1996) This week
