A deadly superbug was discovered in a quarter of water samples collected in water tanks and puddles in the streets of New Delhi, according to a new study.

Experts believe that is the latest proof that the new drug-resistant bacteria, known as NDM-1, named by New Delhi, circulates through the atmosphere and could spread to the rest of the world.

The superbug only can be treated with a pair of highly toxic and expensive antibiotics.

Since it was first identified in 2008, has appeared in several countries, including the U.S., Australia, Britain, Canada and Sweden.

Most infections have been shown in people who traveled recently or received medical procedures in India, Pakistan or Bangladesh.

"This is not a problem that lurks in the future ... There are people who are now dying from infections that can not be," said David Heymann, President of the British Office of Health Protection, who was not involved in the investigation.

In the last quarter of last year, British researchers analyzed more than 200 water samples in the center of New Delhi, even tap water and water collected in the streets.

They found the gene for the superbug in two samples of drinking water and 51 of the street. The researchers found the gene in eleven super-resistant strains of bacteria, including those that cause dysentery and cholera.

By comparison, scientists also collected 70 samples of a treatment center Water in Cardiff, Wales, Britain. There were no superbugs nowhere.

The research was funded by the European Union and published in the journal Lancet Infectious Diseases.

Mark Toleman, a researcher at Cardiff University and one of the authors of the study, said the superbug is spreading in the water supply New Delhi, but experts do not know how many people have been sickened by it.
